Benefits of Exfoliation to the Skin

We are delighted to announce that Tri-Active Exfoliating Masque has won the Best Mask for Oily Skin award for InStyle’s Best Beauty Buys in 2022.

InStyle’s editor says, “Like your home, your skin could use a deep clean, too. This mask features both physical and chemical exfoliants to smooth, polish, and reduce the look of pores by dissolving dead skin cells and balancing sebum.”

Tri-Active Exfoliating Masque is truly an unsung hero in the iS Clinical line of products. It combines powerful botanical enzymes, Salicylic Acid, and eco-friendly microparticles to offer the perfect blend of physical and biochemical exfoliation. The Brazilian Blood Orange aroma delivers a luxurious sensory experience while also providing antioxidant protection.

How to Use It

We recommend using Tri-Active Exfoliating Masque approximately once a week, or as directed by your skincare professional. After you cleanse your skin, moisten with water and then apply an even layer of the masque, gently rubbing in a circular motion. Leave the masque on your skin for up to five minutes to allow enzymes to function. You will notice that the microparticles have dissolved at this point, and you can easily rinse off with cool water and pat dry. Your skin will feel immediately smooth and polished.

Bonus: Try adding the masque to your neck and décolleté to treat often neglected areas.

Eco-friendly Microparticles

Our eco-friendly microparticles in Tri-Active Exfoliating Masque are made from plant-based cellulose and are biodegradable. The cellulose particles used in this product have been shown to be non-abrasive. In clinical studies of this ingredient, if excessive pressure is applied during application, the cellulose particles begin dissolving – thus avoiding any trauma or irritation to the skin. They are friendly not only to skin, but also to the environment, containing none of the plastics that have been banned from cosmetic use due to accumulation in the earth’s waterways.

  • Brazilian Blood Orange– Acts as an antioxidant and provides a luxurious aroma
  • Copper PCA– Helps sebum, enhance skin firmness, and diminish the visual effects of premature aging
  • Papaya Enzymes– Dissolves dead skin cells for gentle, powerful exfoliation
  • Salicylic Acid– Anti-inflammatory BHA that exfoliates the skin and deep-cleanses the pores

The Exfoliation Process

Exfoliation occurs naturally in the skin as outworn stratum corneum cells detach and are removed from the skin’s surface. Replacement of these cells occurs by a self-renewal process as epidermal cells move upward through the skin layers. This natural process is known as desquamation, and it requires about four weeks in healthy skin.

Aging disrupts the normal process of desquamation and skin renewal. Cell metabolism slows and the desquamation process of the stratum corneum becomes prolonged. Cells become denser and cell shedding is more difficult. With slower cellular renewal, the skin can become uneven, dull, rough, scaly, dry, dehydrated, and leathery due to a thickened layer of build up on the skin’s surface.

Acne is another disorder to the desquamation process. In aging skin, cell production and desquamation become underactive. In acneic skin, cell production becomes overactive. When cell production becomes faster than the desquamation process can keep up with, excess skin cells then collect in the hair follicle, causing it to clog. This leads to inflammation and over production of acne bacteria.

Difference Between Physical and Chemical Exfoliation

Proper exfoliation can occur through either physical or chemical methods. Chemical exfoliation includes acids, non-acid peels, enzymes, or other agents. Chemical exfoliants typically include ingredients such as Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, extracts sourced from Sugarcane, fruits, and mixed fruit acids, or Beta-Hydroxy Acids, like Salicylic Acid. Enzymes are also commonly used as chemical exfoliants. They work by dissolving skin cells and facilitating cell renewal. Natural sources of botanical enzymes are Papaya and Pineapple, which are sources of Papain and Bromelain.

Physical exfoliation can be accomplished through devices, including microdermabrasion, or small exfoliant particles. The process of physical exfoliation loosens the outer corneocytes of the stratum corneum. A newer botanical source of physical exfoliants is cellulose. Cellulose is the material composing the cell walls of plants. Small particles of cellulose are uniform in size, have smooth edges, and are non-irritating to the skin while still being very effective.

Exfoliant Combinations

Combining both physical and chemical exfoliation methods can be very effective to the skin. Tri-Active Exfoliating Masque successfully combines both for an efficient and transformative treatment product. It contains Hydroxy Acids (enzymes from Papaya and Pineapple) as well as uniform, non-irritating cellulose particles. All of these ingredients are friendly to both human skin and the environment.
